Irbesartan-hydrochlorothiazide General Information

Irbesartan/HCTZ is a combination of a diuretic called hydrochlorothiazide and an angiotensin II receptor antagonist called Irbesartan. Together the two ingredients help in controlling high blood pressure. The diuretic increases elimination of salt and water from the body, preventing water retention. The angiotensin II receptor antagonist acts by blocking the action of the hormone angiotensin II. This is a major vasoconstrictor. By blocking its action, the medication causes dilation of blood vessels and improves blood supply to the heart and reduces blood pressure. In general, the mediation helps control blood pressure and reduces long term risks associated with hypertension. Irbesartan is chemically described as a 2-butyl-3-[p-(o-1Htetrazol-5-ylphenyl) benzyl]-1, 3-diazaspiro [4.4] non-1-en-4-one. Its empirical formula is C25H28N6O. Hydrochlorothiazide has the chemical name 6-chloro-3, 4-dihydro-2H-1,2,4-benzothiadiazine-7-sulfonamide 1,1-dioxide and its empirical formula is C7H8ClN3O4S2. Irbesartan/HCTZ comes in tablets of strengths 150/12.5 mg, 300/12.5 mg and 300/25 mg. In addition to the active ingredients, the tablets also contain lactose monohydrate, microcrystalline cellulose, pregelatinized starch, croscarmellose sodium, silicon dioxide, magnesium stearate and coloring agents. The drug should be taken as prescribed by the doctor. There may be some mild side effects like headaches, dizziness and nausea but they usually get better as the body gets accustomed to the medication. Serious side effects like chest pain, loss of consciousness, changes in heart rate, allergic reactions should be attended to immediately
