What is arterial hypotension? |
Arterial hypotension is characterized by blood pressure below 100/60 mm Hg. This occurs when there is a decrease in the volume of blood that is being circulated. Both physiological and hereditary factors play a role in this disease. It is characterized by symptoms like fatigue, irritability, headache, giddiness, and sleep disturbances. Patients with arterial hypotension report feeling short of breath while at rest. They may also experience shortness of breath upon physical exertion. Lack of libido, changes in appetite, changes in the menstrual cycle in women and heartburn are also symptoms associated with arterial hypotension. There are many factors associated with arterial hypotension. Some studies show that people with cardiac dysfunction are more prone to this kind of hypotension. People who use diuretics and drugs for hypertension are also more at risk of arterial hypotension. People who have been advised bed rest for a long period of time may also experience arterial hypotension due to prolonged periods of time in the lying position. The treatment recommended will depend upon the cause of arterial hypotension. If electrolyte imbalance is causing the condition, fluid replacement may be recommended. If cardiovascular problems are the cause, treatment aims to improve heart functioning. |
