Blood Pressure Diagnosis

High blood pressure can be diagnosed with medical testing and the measurement of the pressure with the use of a  sphygmomanometer. There are reasons why the blood pressure is out of the normal range when it is diagnosed as mild or high blood pressure. Some of these can be changed to lower blood pressure when the actual cause can be found.

Blood pressure testing is something that can be done painlessly and is important to have done often to avoid complications such as heart disease or stroke, which can be caused by uncontrolled blood pressure. The blood pressure is tested by placing a cuff on the upper arm and pressure is then pumped into the cuff to get an accurate reading. This is a reading of the systolic and diastolic pressure of blood pumping through the ventricles of the heart.

When the blood pressure is being diagnosed health conditions and medications being taken are considered as this can be a cause of high blood pressure or hypertension. Questions can be asked about symptoms such as dizziness, breathlessness, chest pain and leg pain, which can be indicators of high or low blood pressure.

The physician will ask about medical history and this will include if the person is diabetic, as this is one of the medical conditions that can cause high blood pressure. The person whose blood pressure does not seem to have a factor that can be changed or explain why the blood pressure is not normal might have an electrocardiogram and echocardiogram done.
