Conditions Irbesartan-hydrochlorothiazide Treats

Irbesartan/HCTZ is used for the treatment of hypertension. It is a combination of hydrochlorothiazide and irbesartan. Hypertension or high blood pressure is diagnosed when a patient has multiple blood pressure readings over 140/80 mm Hg. Normal blood pressure is 120/80 mm Hg. Hypertension can result in symptoms like breathlessness, increase in heart rate, headache, dizziness, fatigue. It also increases the risk of heart attack and stroke. Hydrochlorothiazide is a diuretic while irbesartan is an angiotensin II receptor antagonist. The diuretic increases urination frequency and prevents water and salt retention within the body. In this way, it helps control blood pressure. The hormone angiotensin II is responsible for constriction of blood vessels.  Irbesartan blocks the action of this hormone and results in vasodilation. This in turn enhances blood flow to the heart and reduces blood pressure.  Irbesartan/HCTZ can be used as first line of treatment in people who do not respond to monotherapy. It can also be used in people who take blood pressure medications along with diuretics to control their blood pressure.  Irbesartan/HCTZ may sometimes be used to treat congestive heart failure and prevent kidney damage due to diabetes. Such off label uses of the drug will be determined depending on the discretion of the doctor
