Can hypotension be present in children? |
In general, children have lower blood pressure readings when compared to adults. However, in some cases, blood pressure may fall significantly resulting in hypotension. Symptoms of low blood pressure in children are the same as that in adults. These include dizziness, fainting, blurred vision, light headedness. The most common type of hypotension in children neutrally mediated hypotension. This occurs when the child has been standing for a long period of time. Blood tends to pool in the legs and the heart might not be able to pump blood fast enough to ensure that the brain receives the required amount of blood and oxygen. Most children will grow out of this in time. Another common reason for hypotension in children is dehydration. Therefore, it is essential to make sure your child drinks plenty of water and fluids. Certain illnesses and medications can also cause hypotension in children. Allergic reactions to some substances can cause blood vessels to dilate, resulting in low blood pressure. In most cases, the symptoms of hypotension last only for a short time. Medication or hospitalization is usually not required. Sometimes, accidents which result in a substantial loss of blood can also cause hypotension. Such cases are medical emergencies and the child needs to be taken to the hospital immediately. |
