Orthostatic hypotension treatment

Orthostatic hypotension or postural hypotension occurs when one changes position suddenly from a sitting or lying position to a standing position. It is characterized by dizziness, lightheadedness, nausea, headache, weakness. The symptoms are mild and usually resolve on their own. The treatment depends on the underlying causes. In some cases, dehydration may be the reason for orthostatic hypotension. This is particularly true in case of diabetics and people who are engaged in hard physical labor. In such cases, fluid replacement is the preferred mode of treatment. If medications like beta blockers and sildenafil are responsible for orthostatic hypotension, the doctor may recommend adjusting the dosage to help resolve the symptoms. People who are more prone to orthostatic hypotension may be advised to wear compression stockings. This will help prevent the blood from pooling in the legs and thus, normal blood flow will be maintained. This in turn will help in curing orthostatic hypotension. Sometimes, doctors may recommend increasing salt and fluid intake. Caffeine may also be recommended in some cases. Non steroidal anti inflammatory medications like ibuprofen can also help relieve the symptoms. If there is a low fluid volume in the blood vessels, fludrocortisones may be prescribed.
