Can one get intracranial hypertension during pregnancy?

Intracranial hypertension is sometimes seen with the pregnant women and it can develop at any stage during the pregnancy. The syndrome called Idiopathic Intracranial hypertension is diagnosed when the intracranial pressure without hydrocephalus increases along with the increase in the pressure of cerebrospinal fluid. The composition of the cerebrospinal fluid remains the same throughout the pregnancy and it does not change with the syndrome.
Intracranial hypertension is basically caused due to the increased pressure inside the cranial membrane for unknown reasons and also due to the impaired reabsorption of the cerebrospinal fluid also causes the increased blood pressure.
Intracranial hypertension in pregnant women sometimes causes headaches, seizure, blurring of the vision and sometimes complete vision loss and other related abnormalities. These pregnant women are commonly treated by using the corticosteroid therapy, serial lumbar puncture, diuretics and also by maintaining a proper diet.

Because of the poor diagnosis methods, the detection of the intracranial hypertension is often limited and hence the pregnant women who are having this syndrome need to be evaluated on case by case only. It is also important that the neuroimaging studies and the management of the syndrome for the pregnant women with the intracranial hypertension must be done under the counseling of the patient’s obstetricians.
