Lotensin General Information
Lotensin belongs to a class of medications called angiotensin converting enzyme inhibitors. It is used to control high blood pressure in children and adults. This medication is manufactured by Novartis Pharmaceuticals. The active ingredient in the medication is benazepril hydrochloride. Its IUPAC name is 3-[[1-(ethoxy-carbonyl)-3-phenyl-(1S) propyl] amino]-2, 3, 4, 5-tetrahydro-2-oxo-1H-1-(3S)-benzazepine-1-acetic acid monohydrochloride and its empirical formula is C24H28N2O5•HCl. It has a molecular weight of 460.96. Lotensin is available doses of 5 mg, 10 mg, 20 mg, and 40 mg benazepril hydrochloride. In addition to the active ingredient, the tablets also contain excipients like colloidal silicon dioxide, crospovidone, hydrogenated castor oil, hypromellose, lactose, iron oxides, microcrystalline cellulose, magnesium stearate, propylene glycol, polysorbate 80, starch, titanium dioxide and talc. The medicine works by binding to angiotensin receptors, thereby blocking the action of angiotensin which causes the blood vessels of constrict. By blocking the action of angiotensin, the drug helps to relax and dilate blood vessels. This in turn improves blood circulation to the heart and reduces blood pressure. Take the drug as prescribed by your doctor. Some side effects like headaches, nausea, dizziness which are common for most blood pressure medications are seen with Lotensin also. Usually, they are mild and disappear as the body adapts to the medication |
