What is Auscultatory method of taking blood pressure? |
Among the different methods in vogue meant for measuring blood pressure, Auscultatory is one of the methods which relies on non invasive techniques and is widely used. Sphygmomanometer is used in this procedure to measure the blood pressure from the height of the column of mercury. This is one of those simple methods meant for blood pressure measurement. The height of the mercury column varies for both the cycles of the heart beat. An inflatable cuff is placed around the upper arm in Auscultatory method. This cuff is attached to a aneroid manometer. This cuff is inflated manually by squeezing a rubber bulb until the artery is occluded. Then the examiner slowly releases the pressure in the cuff when a whooshing sound is heard which is the systolic pressure when the reading is made. The pressure is further released until that stage when there is no noise heard. At this phase the pressure in the artery is known as the diastolic pressure and a reading of the same is noted on the mercury column of the manometer. Auscultatory method is considered to be the easiest and most predominant method for measuring blood pressure in several clinics and hospitals around the world. |
