How the monitor is operated?

While taking blood pressure, it is vital to note that the first measurement taken is the systolic blood pressure and it measures the pressure on the artery walls during the heart beat. The second measurement is the diastolic blood pressure and it measures the pressure on the artery walls between two beats. At this time the heart is at rest. Both these measurements are equally important to diagnose that whether the patient has high blood pressure or not.
While monitoring blood pressure cuff is applied on the biceps of the patient and stethoscope is placed on the inner part of the forearm. Now, valve of the blood pressure measuring equipment must be closed and this will lead to air buildup in the cuff. The pressure that is required to be applied is till the point when radial pulse disappears. Now, the pressure build up is perfect and you must listen to the sounds. Also, it’s the time to slowly open the screw valve which was previously closed. Now, slowly heartbeat will be heard through stethoscope and the first number seen on the blood pressure monitor or gauge needs to be recorded. And when the heartbeat stops being heard, it’s time to record the second number, which is the diastolic pressure.

These days there are digital blood pressure monitors available which are highly convenient and simple to use if you want to monitor blood pressure levels at home.
