What is portal hypertension?

Portal hypertension is characterized by the elevation in the levels of the blood pressure in the portal venous system. Portal hypertension is caused by the cirrhosis of liver which is mainly due to the injury made to the liver by means of hepatitis, consumption of excess alcohol, pruritus or it can be due to hereditary factors. In such a condition the flow of blood through the liver is blocked and leads to portal hypertension.
Other causes for the portal hypertension can be due to the blood clots in the portal vein. It can also occur due to Schistosomiasis, an infection caused by a parasite.
Individuals who are suffering from the liver damage are prone to develop portal hypertension. Their mental status is greatly affected and leads to forgetfulness and confusion. They commonly suffer from lethargy, high irritability, altered sleep pattern, abdominal pain and fever, hematochezia.

Portal hypertension can cause vomiting of the blood, hemorrhage and gastro intestinal bleeding leading to the appearance of blood in the stools. Portal hypertension can also cause encephalopathy, variceal hemorrhage and ascites, a condition where fluids get accumulated in the abdomen. The patients with portal hypertension will generally have less number of platelets, white blood cells which is useful to fight the pathogens that attack against the body immune system
