Can patients with high blood pressure develop glaucoma?

High blood pressure or the hypertension is commonly caused due to defects in the heart, kidney and also with the age factor and it in turn affects the functioning of heart, kidney and the eyes. Hypertension also damages the blood vessels of the retina and the parts of the eyes. It is also speculated that the high blood pressure is found to be one of the causes for glaucoma in which the optic nerve head is severely damaged and it also affects the other blood vessels. 
Glaucoma is a neurodegenerative disorder characterized by the loss of ganglion cells in the retina. It is mainly caused due to the increased intraocular pressure which leads to the mechanical damage of the optical nerve head. Glaucoma is also caused by the other factors like age, ethnicity, diabetes, hormonal treatment and it can also be inherited from the parents. 

Individual who are prone to develop glaucoma has to often check for the high blood pressure and also for the development of glaucoma. Glaucoma once found, has to be treated immediately or it may lead to the partial or the complete loss of sight. A careful examination of the eyes and functioning of the optic nerves must be periodically checked to prevent the glaucoma.
