Oscillometric method for blood pressure measurement |
Oscillometric Method is the one of the oldest methods to measure blood pressure. This method was first demonstrated in the year 1876. This method aims at measuring blood pressure by analyzing oscillations observed in sphygmomanometer. This method is generally used by physicians to measure blood pressure of a person in long term. Electronic pressure sensor of the sphygmomanometer observes the cuff pressure in an accurate manner and interprets them automatically. However, some of the research papers have advocated use of calibration during the method to ensure accurate findings. The method used in oscillometric process is more or less similar to that of auscultatory technique. However, the technical expertise required to conduct oscillometric process is lesser compared to auscultatory technique. To display both systolic and diastolic pressure, physicians take help of algorithms in case of oscillometric method. Medical fraternity is not unanimous regarding the authenticity of findings of oscillometric methods. It might offer different results under different circumstances. In case of people suffering from coronary diseases and blood circulation disorders, the findings might not be accurate. Oscillometric might not provide accurate results if there is incidence of sclerosis, arrhythmia and preeclampsia. In such situations, alternative methods can be used to measure blood pressure. |
