What Is Renovascular Hypertension?

Renovascular hypertension is a hypertension in which there is an abnormality when the blood is flowing to kidneys. People suffering from kidney problems are at high risk of developing renovascular hypertension. Renovascular hypertension is often caused due to insufficient blood flow to the kidneys due to narrowing of arteries. The main function of the renal arteries is to supply blood to kidneys by filtering it at normal pressure and kidneys has the capability to sense the change in blood pressure. If the kidneys have a change in blood pressure, it secretes a hormone known as renin that helps in rejuvenating proper blood flow.

Failure of medication in treating high blood pressure is a sign of renovascular hypertension. Blood test is proved to be beneficial in diagnosing people with renovascular hypertension. Other tests such as CT scan or MRI can be useful in finding out the blockage of renal arteries thereby helping in treating renovascular hypertension. The treatment of renovascular hypertension aims at widening the renal arteries and to open up the arteries medicines that dissolve the fats in the arteries should be taken. If the medicines are ineffective, then surgery is performed in treating this hypertension.
