How to Take Irbesartan-hydrochlorothiazide

Irbesartan/HCTZ is a combination of hydrochlorothiazide and irbesartan. It is available in tablets of different strengths. Different dosages have different ratios of the two ingredients. The recommended starting dosage of Irbesartan/HCTZ is 150/12.5 mg once daily. It takes up to two weeks for the medication to achieve peak anti-hypertensive effect. If the patient does not respond adequately to the initial dose, it can be gradually increased to a maximum of one 300/25 mg tablet once daily. The same dosage can be used in people with mild to moderate renal and hepatic impairment. In people with very severe renal impairment, it is not recommended to use Irbesartan/HCTZ. The appropriate dosage will be determined by the doctor after taking into consideration several factors like the patients overall health, the extent and severity of his or her hypertension, any other co-existing conditions and concomitant medications. Take the medication exactly as prescribed by the doctor. The medication can be taken with or without food. The tablets should be swallowed whole. It should be taken at the same time everyday if possible. While on this medication, make it a point to drink plenty of water or you will be at risk of dehydration. Do not take potassium or salt supplements without consulting your doctor. If you become pregnant while on this medication, inform your doctor since this drug is contraindicated during pregnancy.
