Effects of untreated hypertension

If the hypertension or the high blood pressure is left untreated, it may cause various hazards to the normal functioning of many organs like heart, kidney, brain and eyes. Hypertension can cause the constriction of the arteries and hardens the arterial walls by fat deposition resulting in the condition called atherosclerosis, which in turn leads to coronary heart disease and increases the risk for stroke and heart attack.
When adequate amount of blood is not supplied to the heart, its struggles to do its normal function resulting in heart pain called angina. When the blood vessels flowing to kidneys gets damaged because of hypertension, the kidney cannot efficiently remove the waste products and the fluids and the accumulation of these fluids further worsen the situation and results in complete kidney failure.

The high blood pressure can affect the retina of the eyes resulting in a condition called retinopathy, which sometimes may leads to the blindness of the eyes. Preeclampsia, a disorder seen in the pregnant women with high blood pressure where the baby’s health is greatly affected and sometimes, it may even causes the death of the baby and the mother. Hypertension also affects the sexual life of the individual and it also affects the mental status of a person.
