White coat hypertension: Knowing the condition |
White coat hypertension simply refers to the condition of a high reading of blood pressure only when the person is away from the realms of home and in some clinic or hospital. People who record high blood pressure after consistent readings do not suffer from white coat hypertension. This condition is observed among those who recorded a different value when taken at home and a completely different value at the clinic. In this case the reading is usually higher than 140/90 mm Hg which normalizes back to its healthy or safe value after stepping out of the clinic. The condition is the result of anxiety, especially when the body launches fight responses to combat the drastic change. This could well happen when the body is subjected to extreme circumstances like pain, trauma, and nervousness. However, the same alleviates back to the normal level once the body relaxes or take rest. The condition can affect any one, nevertheless the age and sex. The cause to worry is that the condition can lead to abrupt elevation in the blood pressure by around 30 mm Hg in a short interval. This can impose danger to the life by triggering heart attacks, mild heart strokes. |
